I have a lot of mistletoe in my trees. What is mistletoe?

Mistletoe is a parasitic plant.  It makes its own nutrition from the photosynthesis process; however, it grows deep into the wood of the tree and siphons the water and minerals from it.  For hundreds of years, mistletoe has been associated with positive English traditions that represent peace and romance.  For a tree that’s been infested by mistletoe, there’s nothing positive about it!

Some of my trees with mistletoe don’t look good. Is mistletoe bad for my tree?

It definitely can be!  If mistletoe is professionally removed in the beginning stages of infestation, a small amount of mistletoe won’t harm the tree in its own right. Without professional tree mistletoe removal, it will continue to spread and devastate the infested tree.

Mistletoe will spread rapidly through all of the trees on your residential grounds if you don’t address this mistletoe infestation as soon as you observe it. This parasitic plant is spread quickly by birds so you need to act fast and contact an experienced tree company!

What causes mistle in my trees?

Birds are fond of feeding on mistletoe. After birds eat it, they fly and deposit the seed onto tree limbs.  This is why mistletoe spreads so quickly through your outdoor environment! Mistletoe will continue to flourish and spread if you don’t have it professionally removed!

Can mistletoe kill my tree?

Definitely! Mistletoe is an unsightly tree nuisance and affects the health of your tree in a negative way.  Mistletoe will grow itself deep into your tree’s wood and continue to suck the nutrients and water from the tree, leaving your tree in a vulnerable, weakened state.

Trees that are weak are likely to become infected by other tree diseases and infestation from insect pests. Trees that have been subjected to extreme weather conditions, as we have here in Fort Worth, become even more susceptible. As the mistletoe spreads, you’ll see dead branches and branches falling and your tree will exhibit signs of a dying tree.

Can I remove it myself?

Don’t try it!  Better put, just don’t do it!  Mistletoe tends to grow towards the top of very large, stately trees. Why is that, you ask? That’s where the birds fly! Your safety must come first!  Never attempt to remove mistletoe by yourself and don’t hire an unskilled contract worker!

Safety protocols must be maintained!  Always contact a tree care specialist when you first notice that mistletoe is growing in your trees.
